The illustration on this tea towel is based on William Morris's design for the membership card of the Democratic Federation. Morris (1834-1896) was not only a seminal textile designer but also a poet, novelist and ardent socialist. In 1881, Morris helped establish the Radical Union which aimed to provide a working-class equivalent to the Liberals, but disillusioned with Liberalism he declared himself a socialist and in 1883 joined the Democratic Federation, which was Britain’s first socialist party. It was not long before Morris was a member of the executive council of that organisation and was employing his artistic endeavours to further its objectives. This is your opportunity to become a card-carrying socialist in your own kitchen!
