In the early 20th century, the Greenwood district of Tulsa, Oklahoma, became known as ‘Black Wall Street’ for the successful businesses established by black residents there. In 1921, racist feelings among Tulsa white residents boiled over into violence against black families leaving possibly as many as 300 dead and 35 blocks of the neighborhood destroyed.
