Maya Angelou (1928 - 2014) was an American author, poet, dancer, actress, and singer. She was active in the Civil Rights movement, and worked with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. One of her most well-known and popular poems, "Still I Rise", is found in her volume of poetry of the same name. She speaks for her race and gender in many of the poems, and emphasizes the strength and resiliency of her community.
