Spanish Civil War tea towel

New Spanish Civil War tea towel

The International Brigades (1936 - 1938) were paramilitary units set up by the Communist International to assist the Popular Front government of the Second Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War. It is estimated that 32,000 people from 52 countries fought against Franco in the conflict. Among them were George Orwell and Ernest Hemingway who immortalised their experiences in their novels "Homage to Catalonia" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls".

This tea towel is inspired by one of the many posters that celebrated the cause of the Brigades and were circulated throughout Spanish cities by the Republicans with the purpose of shaping international public opinion and galvanising support against Franco.
